Christmas in August

Sharing and giving is one of the virtues I desire to instill in our children, and we had the perfect opportunity at church this past Sunday. As a congregation we have been supporting a missionary effort in Guatemala to bring transformation to a very poor town, with people mainly evacuated from the mudslides.

This week our church is collecting Christmas gifts for orphan children through WorldHelp.  Before the twins were born, Papito and I used to do Operation Christmas Child with Samaritans Purse. I personally love the opportunity to give to those less fortunate. The experience this week with the kidDOS was fantastic! I wondered if they were going to understand the meaning of sending a gift to children whom they do not know, but it was so simple. When I mentioned that there are some children that do not have things like we do, they went on mentioning almost all their toys one by one. They do not have cars, they do not have play kitchens, they do not have dolls, they do not have kids tables....  so sweet!!

We went around the house collecting items that were suggested to include a long with some others we thought the children will enjoy.  The kidDOS would let me know what they wanted to send, like a little bag of snack cookies, or some Jelly beans, which we use as "Sorpresas" for good effort.  :)

When it was time to place the items into the box, Principe asked me if he could also give one of his cars to "El Nino" (the boy). It was so sweet to witness his heart of sharing and giving. Princesa joined in and asked if "La Nina" (the girl) could have one too.

This was also a great opportunity to use the globe map and talk about countries. We reviewed how Abuelito y Abuelita live in Mexico, how we live in the USA,  and how these children live in Guatemala. We learned to find the country in our toy globes.

During the week we talked several times about the gifts and the kids in Guatemala, since we kept the boxes all week on top of their work table. Princesa would tell me "No tienen" (they don't have).

We ended the week by reviewing some books about Guatemala. We learned a lot about a different way of living life. The Guatemalan style!  :)

Would you like to experience a Christmas in August?
